The old VEB mill in Saara

The former mill works in Saara, municipality Lehndorf in the district of Altenburg, belonged to the district of Leipzig and thus the Kombinatsbildung VEB Combine Grain Economy Leipzig. The now rather dilapidated buildings were built in the early years of the 20th century. From 1977, the Mühlewerk Gardschütz belonged to the VEB Mühlenwerk Saara. In the Saara plant, 100 tons of grain were produced per day for wheat flour, among others for roux, cake and pudding cake. For tea biscuits, pies and pies the white extract flour was added. The three-ears-mill-logo coined in GDR times the sales paper bags of the Mühlenwerke Saara with the orange-colored circle and the three-wheat ears, in which consumers paid in Ddr times 1.40 marks for about 1 kilogram of wheat flour. In 1990, the trust company privatized the Mühlenwerke Saara and these became the Drei-Ähren Mühlen Saara GmbH, of which the inscription on the mill building still bears witness today. After the privatization by the Treuhand the Saaraer mill work of the Vogtlandmühlen GmbH belonged to Straßberg and was taken over then shortly after the turn with the mill work Stahmeln in Leipzig, by the VK Mühlen AG Hamburg by trust supplement, which with the processing of 60,000 wheat and rye 30 % Market share in Central Germany. With the takeover after the turning point to the AG Hamburg also the decommissioning of the machines in Saara took place, only the administration, accounting and the bookkeeping was still executed by an eight-headed office management in Saara. Also, the mill in Saara was in dire straits by the Treuhand, because all the land and also the sixteen company flats in Treuhand real estate flowed and remained only for the production of indispensable fixed assets. Since the court could not clearly explain the ownership of the mill due to the back and forth de Treuhand, the Mühlenwerke in Saara was temporarily shut down several times by court order. Whereupon the fixed-term contract was not extended and in 1995 the doors of the former VEB`s closed forever. The milling operation was relocated to the Mühlenwerke in Stahmeln and Straßberg and the still functioning machinery and equipment sold. According to the Ostthüringer Zeitung, the former VEB Mühlenwerk Saara was bought by a Tunisian in 2010, but since the purchase, the current owner has neither shown nor taken care of the dilapidated and collapsed buildings of the mill. At the moment, the municipality is paying for the costs of securing the mill so that no personal injury or worse happens. It would be desirable if the beautiful old buildings of the former mill would be saved even before complete collapse or collapse.
